The German domestic cup is known as the DFB Pokal, the equivalent to the FA Cup, Copa del Rey, and the Coppa Italia. It has 64 teams that participate from the top 3 levels of professional German futbol. 18 teams from the Bundesliga, 18 teams from the Bundesliga 2, the 4 top teams from the 3rd level German Liga, and 24 top teams from lower associated leagues (champions of their regional cups).
The tournament begins in August and ends in May, in a knock-out style format. The final is held in the Olympic Stadium of Berlin, and the winner goes on to the Europa League (unless they've already qualified for the Champions League) The winner of this cup also plays the winner or runner up of the Bundesliga in what is known as the DFL-SuperCup.
History of the Pokal
It was first founded in 1935 as the Tschammerpokal, which was named after the chief of sports for the German Reich, Hans Von Tschammer und Osten. In the Nazi dictatorship of the time, he was known as the Reich Sports Leader, most notably for establishing this tournament as well as the organization of the Berlin Olympics of 1936. The first champion of this national futbol tournament was FC Nuremburg. This tournament came to abrupt end after 1943 due to the fall of the Nazi German Reich.
In 1953 the national tournament was re-established in West Germany by the new German Futbol Association, as the DFB-Pokal (Deutsher Fubbal Bund). East Germany also had their own separate domestic cup, the FDGB-Pokal, from 1949 to 1991 until the two countries were once again unified. In 1957, the club Bayern Munich went on to win their first national cup and begin a long tradition of success. Since it's inception Bayern Munch has dominated both the Bundesliga as well as the DFB Pokal with a total of 16 championships.
