The fourth biggest domestic cup in Europe is the Coppa Italia. (The equivalent to the English FA Cup, Spanish Copa del Rey, and German Pokal). It is an annual cup that coincides with the regular season, bringing together top clubs with lower clubs. It includes 78 clubs from the 4 top tier divisions of the Italian futbol system, Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, and Serie D. It was established in 1922, first won by F.C. Vado. To this day Roma and Juventus have won the most cups with 9 a piece.
The format is a single-elimination tournament that consists of 8 phases. The first phase begins with 36 teams from the Lega Pro (Serie C) and Serie D. The next round brings in 22 clubs from Serie B. The third round brings in the 12th lowest ranked teams of Serie A. By the fifth round, the 8 highest ranked clubs of Serie A enter the tournament to make up the Round of 16. At this point it is a free-for-all, anyone's game.
The championship is traditionally held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The winners of the Coppa Italia qualify for the UEFA Europa League (2nd-tier international league to the Champions League). It is customary in Italy for the champions to wear a badge on their uniform, the following season, known as the Coccarda.
