The past couple weeks now I have closely followed the US Open Championships on ESPN. I've been watching every match I can of the mens and singles tournament both during the day at work and at home in the evenings. This marks about a year now that I began following and enjoying the 4 major grand slam tournaments of tennis. It's a very exciting sport unlike any other, that displays an athlete's physical strength with their mental strength.
Throughout this tournament I have come to better understand the superstar athletes of the sport as well the mind games and body language that comes with the sport. For example I never realized how alone these athletes are out there and constantly have to deal with a roller coaster of emotions. Unlike team sports, where teammates can support one another, it is only up to the individual tennis player to dictate his or her final performance. Another key component of the mental match is the crowd effect and how it can clearly favor one player over the other. No matter how professional these athletes may be, it is hard to play against someone who has the favor of the crowd.

Top Female Players
- Serena Williams: (USA) She is without question the greatest female tennis player of all time, arguably the greatest female athlete of all time. She has won 23 grand slam single title and has won the US Open 6 times. She displays a dominant style to her tennis intimidating any opposition. She has recently given birth to a child. However she fell short at the championship match against Naomi Osaki and lost her composure against the umpire. She will surely be back again.
- Venus Williams: (USA) She is the elder sister of Serena and can be considered an all time great in her right with her 7 grand slam titles. She has not won a title since 2016 however, and fell short last year in Wimbeldon against Garbine Mugaruza. She has won 2 US Opens in 2000 and 2001.
- Maria Sharapova: (RUS) She is one the top names in female tennis, a 5 time grand slam champion and also a supermodel beauty. She however has fallen into a rut since her doping scandal and has not won a title since 2014. She has won the US open once in 2006 and lost in the 4th round this year.
- Angelique Kerber (GER): She is an aggressive veteran and 3 time grand slam champion. She recently beat Serena Williams at this years Wimbeldon Championships. She won the US Open in 2016.
- Garbine Mugaruza: (ESP) She is my favorite women tennis player because she is Spanish-Venezuelan and the most attractive. She has won 2 grand slam titles her first in 2016 at the French Open and her 2nd last year in Wimbledon. She did poorly however this year at the US Open and has never made it past the 3rd round. She is still very young however and a top quality tennis player.
- Sloane Stephens: (USA) She is a young superstar in the making having won the US Open last year. She fell short this year in the French Open and was unable to defend her title in the US Open. However she is still very young and hungry and has the same confident aggressive qualities that Serena has.
- Caroline Wozinacki: (DEN) She recently won her first grand slam title at the Australian Open this year, however has been on the grand slam stage for some time now. She has lost twice in the finals of the US Open in 2009 and 2014. This year she was eliminated early on in the tournament.
- Simona Halep: (ROM) She is another young superstar and recent champion of this years French Open. She was ranked number 1 going into this US Open tournament however was eliminated in the early rounds. Her best result in the US Open so far was the semi-final of 2005.
- Madison Keys: (USA) She is one of the top young female tennis players in the game however has still yet to win a grand slam championship. She lost in the final last year to Sloane Stephens and in the semi-final this year to Naomi Osaka. However she is still very young and hungry and surely will get a grand slam title soon.
- Naomi Osaka: (JPN) She is the new rising superstar from this recent US Open, winning her first ever grand slam against Serena Williams. She displayed great composure in the midst of controversey and was without question the rightful champion. She is only 20 years old, and will surely be adding more titles to her collection.
Top Male Players
- Roger Federer (SWI) He is the undisputed greatest male tennis player of all time with his 20 grand slam titles. He is one of my favorite tennis players especially for his extremely humble personality for being such a champion. He won Wimbeldon in 2017 the first time I ever followed a tournament and recently won the Australian Open. He has won the US Open 5 times, however fell short this year in the quarter-finals.
- Rafael Nadal (ESP) He is the 2nd greatest male tennis player of all time with his 17 grand slam titles. He is another of my favorite players for his competitiveness and very humble personality similar to Roger Federer. His quaterfinal match against Dominic Theim was the stuff of legend as he came back from losing the first set in 6-0 and won the game in 5 sets and 5 hours. He has won the US Open 3 times, and was the defending champion last year, however came up short this year in the semis against Juan Martin del Potro.
- Novak Djokovic (SRB) He is arguably the 3rd greatest male tennis player of all time with his 14 grand slam titles (tied with Pete Sampras) He recently won Wimbeldon this past July and won his 3rd US Open this year after defeating Juan Martin del Potro. I am not as big of a fan as his due to his cocky demeanor; he lacks the humility of Federer and Nadal. It is quite clear in watching all his matches why the crowd never favors him over his opponent.
- John Isner (USA) He is perhaps the best active American male tennis player at the moment and has recently earned two semi-final appearances at Wimbledon and the US Open. He is extremely tall at 6'10 and is known for his power serve. At Wimbledon he has the record for the longest match of nearly 11 hours, and had the 2nd longest match this past July in the semi finals against Kevin Anderson of which he lost. He made it to the quarterfinals in this tournament however lost to Juan Martin del Potro. He has yet to win a grand slam title.
- Dominic Thiem (AUT) He is a young rising superstar with a serious intensity about his play. He lost this year in the final of French Open against Rapha Nadal. At this tournament he gave one of the most exciting matches played against Rapha Nadal in the quarterfinals. He has yet to win a grand slam title.
- Andy Murray (GBR) He has won 3 grand slam titles and numerous final appearances in the past 10 years. He was once considered a top elite player in the category of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. However recently Murray has fallen off the top rankings due to injuries. At this tournament he was eliminated in the early rounds.
- Juan Martin del Potro (ARG): He has won 1 grand slam title at the US Open in 2009, yet has often been a top contender the past 10 years. He has made it to the Semi-finals multiple times at Wimbeldon and the French Open. He is often considered a gentle giant, with a very likable humble personality. He is best known for his power serve. He was able to defeat Nadal in the Semi-Finals at this US Open however fell short in the final match against Djokovic. He is playing at the top of his game right now and hopefully next year he will secure another grand slam title.
